State Patrol officers and county deputies are authorized to enforce weight limits. Weight limit restrictions for the Town of Freeman were put into effect March 4, 2022.
Under Wisconsin Statute Section 86.02 a party which has caused damage to the highway is liable for triple the cost to repair the damages. These are collected through civil court.
86.02 Injury to highway. Any person who shall injure any highway by obstructing or diverting any creek or watercourse or sluiceway, or by dragging logs or timber thereon, or by any other act, shall be liable in treble damages, to be recovered by the political division chargeable with the maintenance of highway injured, and the amount recovered shall be credited to the highway maintenance fund.
Except for vehicles authorized in the Statutes to have excess axle weights (Sections 348.15(3) (bg, br, & bv), trucks which intend to also use local road systems must obtain permission from the local maintenance authority.
Fines may be imposed to cover damages.
